If you qualify under Rule 5, then read the notes that come up. As you'll see, the picture may not be as rosy as the Caculator suggests. 

Rule 1: Children in public care (children looked after) and children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or a special guardianship order).

Rule 2: Medical or social needs. A panel will determine whether there’s enough evidence to admit your child under this rule. You must provide supporting evidence from a doctor, psychologist or other professional involved with your child. You will need to show that only one particular school can meet your child’s needs.

Rule 3: Sibling in the priority area. Children with a sibling at the school at the time of application (unless the sibling is in their final year). A ‘sibling’ means a sister, half sister, adopted sister, or child of the parent/carer or partner. The children must live in the same house from Monday to Friday.

Children who live in the priority area

Use SchoolGuru's Parish Calculator to find out if you live in the school's priority area. Then carry on going through the rules. Places will be allocated to each parish/unparished area or town in proportion to the number of applications made. In the event of there being more applications than places available to a particular parish/unparished area or town, places will be allocated as follows:

Rule 5: You live in the priority area, and this is your nearest non-faith, non partially selective school catering for girls. Tiebreaker: distance. NB: Even if it's your nearest school, you won't know if you qualify under Rule 5 or Rule 6 until after allocation day - it will depend on the cut-off distance in your parish, which varies each year. Put in Rule 5 - ignore the stars - and read the notes that come up. You will need to see if you live closer than the cut-off distance provided, to discover if you would have got a place, or been tipped into the ballot. 

Rule 6: A lottery for children who live within the priority area. If you live in the priority area, but don't quality under Rule 4 or 5, you'll qualify under Rule 6. Any remaining places to your town/parish/unparished area will be allocated on a random basis. Whether you’ve ranked this school 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th won’t affect your chances.

Rule 8: Any remaining places will be allocated on a random basis. Whether you’ve ranked this school 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th won’t affect your chances.

Tiebreaker: These rules are applied in the order they are printed above. If more children qualify under Rules 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 than there are places available, a tie-break will be used by applying the next rule to those children.

Special note: Any child with a statement of special educational needs, that names the school, will be offered a place (because that’s the law!).
