Admission rules for Hitchin Girls' School

This is an academy single-sex girls' secondary school.

Specialist status: Science

Rule 1. Children who are/were looked after. 

Rule 2. Medical or Social needs

Rule 3. Sibling in the priority area: Children who have a sibling at the school at the time of application, excluding sisters who a) first entered the school in the Sixth Form (Year 12) or b) are in Year 13 which is the last year of the normal age range of the school. 

Rule 4. Children of staff.

Children who live in the priority area

Places will be allocated to each parish/unparished area or town in proportion to the number of applications made. In the event of there being more applications than places available to a particular parish/unparished area or town, places will be allocated as follows:

Rule 5. Children who live in the Hitchin Parish.

(a) The school will allocate up to 120 places to children in Hitchin. You're given priority if this is your nearest school/academy that's non-faith and non-partially selective. Tiebreak: proximity to the school. ]

(b) If the 120 places aren't filled, then they will be offered to students who live in Hitchin but don't have this as their nearest school. Tiebreak: proximity to the school. 

If fewer than 120 places are allocated to girls in Hitchin, then the balance will be added to the places available to applicants from the rest of the priority area and distributed under rule 6 (the Hitchin parish will not be given any extra places).

Rule 6. Children who live in the rest of the priority area by parish, on a proportional basis. (Max 20 places to Letchworth under Rules 1-6).

(a) Girls who have this as their nearest Hertfordshire maintained school or academy that is non-faith and non-partially selective and admits girls. Tiebreaker: proximity to the school.

(b) Girls in the priority area who don't have this as their nearest school. Tiebreaker: random ballot. 

Outside the priority area 

Rule 7. Girls with siblings at the school who live outside the priority area. 

Rule 8. Any other places will be allocated on a random basis.

Special note: Any child with a statement of special educational needs, that names the school, will be offered a place (because that’s the law!).
