Do you have a small child and want to know when they'll start school? Or are you moving here from overseas? The English system could be different from the one you're used to - and this can be confusing. We know one child who started off in the wrong year because the school got mixed up. Your child's date of birth will determine when they'll start school and which year they'll be in for the rest of their time at school. The date of birth ranges are shown below - just select the range that covers your child's date of birth... This info is valid from September 2017 until the end of August 2018, when this page will be updated.
1/9/1999 - 31/8/2000
Your child is in Year 13 (Upper Sixth) and finishes school at the end of the summer term in 2018. Onwards and upwards - good luck!
1/9/2000- 31/8/2001
Your child is in Year 12 (Lower Sixth) and starts Year 13 (Upper Sixth) in September 2018.
1/9/2001 - 31/8/2002
Your child is in Year 11 and starts Year 12 in September 2018. Contact individual schools or colleges for their application deadlines for sixth form courses. You do not normally need to apply if you want to stay on at your school’s own sixth form.
1/9/2002- 31/8/2003
Your child is in Year 10 and starts Year 11 in September 2018. If you would like to stay on at school or college beyond the age of 16, start looking at schools or colleges now, and check out the application deadlines for sixth form courses. The deadlines can be as early as the Autumn term in Year 11. You do not normally need to apply if you want to stay on at your school’s own sixth form.

Your child is not school age yet and starts Reception in September 2018. If you apply on time for a Reception place (by January 2018) then you will be allocated a school on 16 April 2016.

All children aged 3 and 4 are entitled to 15 hours of nursery care per week. Contact the Council to make sure you get your share. The usual time for applications is February-March.
