Measuring up: how far is it to the school I want?

Hertfordshire County Council use their own computer-based mapping system to measure distances from individual homes to schools. This isn’t available to the general public. However, the Admission Calculators on this website will provide you with an estimate of how far away you live from any of the schools you choose. You can also use SchoolGuru's customised maps. We've broken Hertfordshire up into three areas, to make it easier for you to search for your local schools. Please select the map you want and follow the easy instructions below...

Please note that the distance measurements for 2011/12 will be calculated using straight line measurements (rather than the previous system of shortest routes via roads or paths). Please visit Hertfordshire County Council's website for further information. Once the details for the new system have been confirmed, we will update this website to reflect the changes.

Instructions

1. Click on the map you want. It will open up on another page, so you can still see these instructions.
2. Primary schools have pink place-markers, and secondary schools have blue place-markers. Middle and junior schools have pink place-markers with a dot in the middle. Scroll through the list of schools on the left. Alternatively, if you know the name of the school you want, go to 'Find...' (under 'Edit' in your menu bar). Type in the name of the school – and it will jump to it.
3. Click on the school you're interested in. You can use the '+/-' feature at the top of the page to zoom in and explore the area around the school.
4. By clicking on the school, you can also 'get directions' to your address. This will give you an idea of how far away it is from your house.
5. Convert miles into kilometres, by clicking on 'show options' at the top of the left hand panel. Then click on 'km' and 'get directions'. Alternatively, with some systems, you'll have the option of clicking on 'km' at the bottom of the driving instructions. Either will do! Add three zeros to convert into metres.
6. For more advanced users, if you want to do your own mapping, click on 'My Maps' and select the distance measuring tool. You can then follow short cuts, cycle paths, etc, to work out your own distances. Once you've played around with this for a few minutes, you'll see how easy it is... promise!

Map tip: If you sign up for a free Google Account, you can save any of these maps (click 'Save to My Maps'). If you save them all, you can then view any combination (eg, primary and secondary schools in your area) just by highlighting the maps you want.

Measure in metres, rather than yards and miles. Hertfordshire County Council measure distances in metres down to two decimal points.
Measure from your front door to the nearest public entrance of the school. Your unique ‘address point’ is used by Hertfordshire County Council, for measuring purposes, and this is usually located within your house rather than the garden.
Your aim is to measure the shortest possible route – experiment with a few different routes, if you need to, and use the shortest distance in the Admission Calculator.
Whatever route you choose can follow roads, cycleways adopted by Hertfordshire County Council, and other paths with a proper made-up surface, such as tarmac or concrete. The roads don’t need to have a separate pavement and can be lit or unlit. The route must be a public right of way, ie, anyone should be able to use it at any time.
